FETAL STEM CELL TRANSPLANT 03/21/2010
February 27, 2009 I was invited by the family of my 5 year old patient, JT, a lovely boy on the spectrum to fly to the MEDRA clinic in the Dominican Republic. He is healthier than ever yet still has expressive language issues. Stem cell transplantation is on the horizon as a possible treatment or cure for many autoimmune disorders. The difference in this case is that the cells transplanted by simple IV infusion are derived from an aborted fetus. I spent time speaking with Dr. William Rader MD, from California who runs this clinic. Since the use of cells derived from an abortus is illegal in the US, Dr. Rader has established clinics in the Dominican Republic and Mexico to serve patients around the country. He has performed over 1500 of these infusions during the past 15 years. Approximately 60 have been on autistic patients. I am anxiously awaiting clinical changes in JT. I dont expect any results for at least 8 weeks. I will write as soon as I hear anything. Stay tuned.......... CommentsJoey Loveria 08/11/2010 5:35:34 pm Any response yet on JT? I have a 11 year old daughter who has autism and we've been reading about stem cell. It sounds too good to be true so I'm skeptical and it will help us if somebody will be able to give first hand info. Dr. Michael Elice 08/19/2010 12:14:33 pm Hi Joey. Thanks for the comment. Here is an update... Dr. H. Soriano 12/06/2010 8:52:28 am Joey, unless these trials are part of an approved clinical trial with proper research comittee review, stay clear of them. Stem cells are likely to be the answer to many diseases this century. However, there is much hype and hocus pocus treatments out there which have resulted in harm. When things work, they get pulished and not just on a website but on a regular medical journal. While there are arrogant skeptics in the medical community, there are many open minded doctors and trials that work DO get published. Autism is a bag of many diseases but some of them have a strong immune component. I would reccomend a trial with immune modulating medicines before a cell therapy trial at this point.
